Thighplasty (Thigh Lift) in Huntington Beach, CA

Thighplasty, also called a thigh lift, removes loose, sagging skin and excess fat from the thighs and tightens the remaining skin for a smoother, firmer shape. It is designed for skin laxity that exercise and liposuction cannot correct, most often after major weight loss, GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic or Wegovy, pregnancy or aging. For many patients it also ends the daily discomfort of chafing.

At Tran Plastic Surgery in Huntington Beach, thighplasty is performed by Dr. Tuan Tran, who is triple board-certified in plastic surgery, hand surgery and reconstructive surgery, with a focus on natural contours and careful incision placement.

Thighplasty at a glance

  • Treats: loose skin and fat of the inner, and in some cases outer, thighs
  • Anesthesia: general anesthesia
  • Surgery time: typically about two to four hours, depending on the technique
  • Setting: usually outpatient
  • Back to desk work: usually about two weeks
  • Strenuous exercise: usually after about six weeks, once cleared

What Is Thighplasty?

A thigh lift reshapes the thighs by removing excess skin and fat and lifting the remaining tissue into a firmer position. Liposuction is often performed at the same time to refine the contour. The result is thighs that look smoother and more toned, fit better in clothing and rub together less.

Every thigh lift leaves a permanent scar. Dr. Tran places incisions where they are easiest to conceal, such as the groin crease or the inner thigh, and chooses the shortest incision that will genuinely correct the loose skin.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for thighplasty if you:

  • Have loose, sagging or dimpled skin on the thighs that does not improve with exercise
  • Experience chafing, rashes or irritation from excess thigh skin
  • Have reached a stable weight, ideally for several months, after weight loss
  • Are in good general health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop
  • Understand that the procedure leaves a permanent scar and have realistic expectations

If your skin still has good elasticity and the concern is mainly stubborn fat, liposuction alone may be enough. Dr. Tran will tell you honestly which approach your thighs need.

Thighplasty Techniques

The technique depends on where the loose skin sits and how much there is.

Inner (Medial) Thigh Lift

For loose skin concentrated at the top of the inner thigh, the incision is hidden in the groin crease. The skin is lifted and tightened upward, and the scar is usually concealed by underwear or swimwear.

Vertical (Extended) Inner Thigh Lift

When loose skin runs down the length of the inner thigh, often after massive weight loss, the incision extends along the inner thigh toward the knee. This removes skin along the full length of the thigh and creates the most significant tightening.

Outer (Lateral) Thigh Lift

Loose skin on the outer thighs and hips is usually treated with an incision near the hip line, often as part of a lower body lift. It can be combined with a tummy tuck to address the waist, hips and thighs together.

Liposuction-Assisted Thigh Lift

Liposuction is frequently combined with a thigh lift to remove stubborn fat before the skin is tightened. For more definition, Dr. Tran also offers VASER® high-definition liposculpture.

What to Expect

Your Consultation

Dr. Tran examines your thighs, assesses skin quality and fat, reviews your health and weight history, and explains which technique fits and where the scar would sit. You leave with a clear plan and a written, itemized quote.

Surgery Day

Your thighs are marked while you stand, so the plan reflects how the skin hangs naturally. After anesthesia, Dr. Tran performs any liposuction, removes the excess skin and fat, and closes the incision in layers. A compression garment is placed before you wake, and a responsible adult drives you home.

Recovery Timeline

  • First week: swelling, tightness and bruising are normal. Walk short distances several times a day to support circulation, and avoid spreading your legs wide or sitting for long periods.
  • Weeks one to two: most patients return to desk work around the two-week mark. The compression garment is worn continuously.
  • Weeks three to six: swelling keeps settling and everyday activity increases. Running, cycling and lower-body workouts wait.
  • After about six weeks: most patients are cleared for full exercise.
  • Three to twelve months: the final contour emerges and the scars gradually flatten and fade.

About the Scars

Thigh lift scars follow the incision pattern: in the groin crease for an inner thigh lift, along the inner thigh for a vertical lift, or near the hip line for an outer thigh lift. They start pink and firm, then soften and lighten over twelve to eighteen months. Keeping the incisions clean and dry, protecting them from the sun and not smoking all help them heal well.

Risks and Safety

Like all surgery, thighplasty carries risks. Because the incisions are close to the groin and move with walking and sitting, delayed healing or small separations of the wound are the most common issue. Other risks include wider or raised scars, fluid collection (seroma), infection, asymmetry, numbness, prolonged swelling of the legs and blood clots. Choosing a board-certified surgeon, being at a stable weight, not smoking and following your recovery instructions all reduce these risks. Dr. Tran reviews every risk that applies to you at your consultation.

Combining a Thigh Lift With Other Procedures

After major weight loss, loose skin usually affects more than one area. Thighplasty is often planned together with a brachioplasty (arm lift), a tummy tuck or a Brazilian butt lift, either in one operation or in stages. Dr. Tran explains the options on our body contouring after weight loss page.

Cost and Your Consultation

The cost of a thigh lift depends on the technique, whether liposuction is included, and whether other procedures are combined. Rather than quote a figure before seeing you, we provide a written, itemized quote at your free consultation, so you know exactly what is included. Thigh lifts are usually considered cosmetic by insurance companies; if loose skin causes documented medical problems such as recurring rashes or skin breakdown, some insurers review coverage case by case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a thigh lift help with chafing?

For most patients, yes. Removing the excess skin that rubs together is one of the main reasons people choose a thigh lift, and many find walking, exercising and wearing shorts far more comfortable afterward.

How much weight should I lose before a thigh lift?

Ideally you are at or near your goal weight and have kept it stable for several months. Further weight loss after surgery can create new loose skin, while weight gain can stretch the result.

Can I have thighplasty while taking Ozempic or another GLP-1 medication?

Many thigh lift patients have lost weight with a GLP-1 medication. Surgery is best planned once your weight has plateaued. Tell Dr. Tran and the anesthesia team about the medication, because you may be asked to pause it before surgery for safety.

When can I sit normally and drive?

Short periods of sitting are fine from the start, but long periods of sitting and positions that spread the legs are avoided early on. Most patients can drive once they are off prescription pain medication and can brake comfortably, often within about one to two weeks.

How long do thigh lift results last?

The skin that is removed does not come back, so results are long-lasting. Aging and significant weight changes can still affect the thighs over time, which is why keeping a stable weight matters.

Is liposuction alone ever enough?

Yes, when the skin still has good elasticity and the main concern is stubborn fat. If the skin is loose or sagging, removing fat alone can make it look looser, and a thigh lift is the procedure that removes it.
